Versailles is a palace were kings and queens lived. King Louis XIV had it built after his father King Louis XIII died. The land were Versailles is located on was origanilly were King louis XIII had built sa hunting lodge years before, but the new king had made plans to build Versailles. It took about 40 years to complete the building processe. Versailles is more than 1/4 of a mile long and has about 1,300 rooms that have been referbished so that it looks like royaltiy still lives in them. The palace gardens were first laid out by landscaper in the 1660's. They were enlarged several times and now cover nearly 250 acres. Plants, fountains, and statues are arranged in geometric patterns. The park also includes two small palaces called the Grand Trianon, designed the in 1687, and the Petit Trianon. Nearby are stables; an orangery (greenhouse for growing orange trees), and the picturesque hameau, a miniature farm designed for Queen Marie Antoinette.
